Virtual Reality Gives Hitman a New Lease of Life

The video game Hitman is experiencing new levels of popularity thanks to virtual reality headsets which offer players a truly immersive gaming experience. Hitman 3’s PC virtual reality mode was officially launched in January 2022, giving even more fans access to the game via headsets.

The Hitman franchise

The highly-successful Hitman video game franchise was launched in 2000 with Hitman: Codename 47. The original series consisted of just five games, but the franchise has added the World of Assassination trilogy along with spinoffs such as Hitman: Sniper and collections including the Hitman HD Enhanced Collection. The video game series has also inspired two movies: Hitman in 2007, which starred Timothy Olyphant and Hitman: Agent 47, which featured Rupert Friend in the starring role, in 2015.

The video games and movies have been so popular that the Hitman franchise has also led to an innovation in another area of the entertainment industry. There has been a boom in officially branded slots of popular video games and movies in the iGaming industry and the Hitman online slot has followed this trend. The online slot, which is available to play on Lucky Dino, has received positive reviews on the casino review site CasinoSmash. With such a wide selection of titles available to customers, this highlights the importance of review sites in the entertainment industry.

The attraction of the hitman franchise means there is a steady stream of new innovations to keep fans interested. The availability of these branded titles really demonstrates the popularity of the franchise.

Hitmen in movies

Movies featuring hitmen and assassins have always been popular with countless films depicting solitary figures hired to kill, often for underworld bosses. It has also led to various portrayals of hitmen, from the serious to the comical. For example, the 1994 black comedy Pulp Fiction, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, depicts the hitmen Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta, as hapless, satires of professional hitmen, who prefer philosophizing about hamburgers to doing their job.

And the hitman movie genre remains popular to this day, with the 2022 release of The Last Mark, starring Alexia Fast, Shawn Doyle and Josh Cruddas. The movie tells the story of an aging hitman who is tasked to kill the witness to a murder but suddenly develops a conscience. This makes his latest mark, or victim, the most difficult he has ever faced. This twist on the hitman genre has won praise from Comic Book Resources.

Virtual reality enhances gaming experience

Game Rant has reported that the virtual reality feature has given Hitman another lease of life. It is a real vote of confidence in virtual reality headsets, with games such as Half-Life: Alyx demonstrating the capabilities of the new technology and delighting fans by offering them an immersive gaming experience.

Eskil Mohl, senior game designer at IO Interactive, highlighted just how virtual reality has taken the video game to a whole new level: “Whereas before, in the third-person game, maybe you got a little distracted from something else. But now you can’t escape them anymore. They are right in your face. I found myself traversing the level slower, just taking everything in because it’s so dense with detail.”

Virtual reality is really showing its strengths in the gaming industry, providing players with a fully immersive experience. Virtual reality games are likely to play an integral part in the gaming industry of the future.
