CoreXY printers use bells to move the X/Y axis simultaneously for faster and smoother printing.

The printer head remains at the top of the product while its build plate lowers. You will get high-quality prints when this motion combines with the vibration-damping input shaping.

The auto bed levelling system of the printer offers an initial layer without requiring adjustments to the z height. After a quick automated calibration process, the P1S transitions into operation.

The P1S is a fully enclosed unit featuring sleek black plastic side panels. It has smoked glass elements for the upper section and its door. All the components of the P1P remain on this printer, like its speed and unparalleled accuracy.

All the optimisations integrated into the P1S are what users felt the P1P should have had since the beginning.

Another enhancement of this model is a durable fan for cooling parts quickly. It is essential for fast 3D printers since plenty of hot-moving material can warp the model weirdly.

Additionally, it has an LED light strip and camera for recording timelapse videos you can post to TikTok, Instagram, etc.

Bambu Lab AMS (Automatic Material System)

The huge advantage of the P1S is its compatibility with the Automatic Material System or AMS. Our Bambu Lab P1S 3D Printer Review will discuss this system and how it works.

The AMS is an add-on system like the Prusa MMU (Multi Material Upgrade). It is not an inclusion when buying the P1S but is available in a combo package or separate purchase. Also, you can place the AMS next to or on top of the P1S.

For its functions, it is a four-spool feeder that enables printing in four to sixteen colours. The AMS allows the printer to switch between filament spools in the middle of printing. Note that one AMS lets you swap between four filament spools.

This system can read and identify RFID tags of Bambu Lab spools. When you install a filament, the RFID tag provides data to the printer, including material type and colour. The printer matches this information with presets in the Bambu Studio software.

If you want to use third-party filaments, it will work with the P1S. However, you must provide the material information manually since these do not have RFID tags from Bambu Lab.

The AMS also features pockets for descants, which seal tightly. As a result, you can use the AMS as a dry box for nylon and similar filaments.

The AMS also has a backup option, allowing it to switch from one slot to another automatically. Tripping a run-out sensor is unnecessary. It will also be excellent for using partial spools or when your model needs more than one spool.

Print with Multiple Materials

AMS is highly versatile and works with many filament types, including ASA, ABS, PETG, PLA, PC, etc.

Convenient Support Removal

With AMS, the P1S can use dissolvable filament or snap-away support material. It helps reduce the hassle of removing supports.

No Leftover Filaments

Manually Replacing spools disrupts printing when you do not have AMS, resulting in wasted filaments. AMS makes transitioning to a new spool seamless and convenient to prevent wasting material.

Filament Backup for Uninterrupted Printing

Printing never stops, thanks to automatic spool changing. AMS has a filament backup function to keep you worry-free from running out of material. Printing is seamless and uninterrupted, preventing wasted filaments while promoting energy efficiency.

Advanced Intelligent System

AMS uses a 32-bit MCU, actuators, sensor arrays, and an intelligent algorithm. As a result, it can handle filament loading and unloading, detect faulty printing, and recover prints.

Filament Winding Detection

Tangled filaments or stuck spools can cause the material at the tool head to encounter resistance. AMS can detect this instance immediately and suspend printing to prevent empty prints.

No More Wet Filaments and Failed Prints

The AMS’s air-tight seal and desiccant material absorb moisture to prevent wet filaments and print failure.

Automatically Identifies Bambu Lab Filaments

Filaments from Bambu Lab feature an RFID for the AMS to detect. It automatically synchronises to Bambu Studio for more convenience.

This part of our Bambu Lab P1S 3D Printer Review focuses on our hands-on experience with the printer. We used it for two weeks to test and print various items.

The printer comes pre-assembled and only requires unpacking and attaching the spool holder and the control screen. Afterwards, you will receive a walkthrough to help you through each step.

The setup process was intuitive and easy, and its instructions were clear. The process was straightforward, like setting up a TV set, so newbies would not have troubles here.

Moreover, the printer has a fantastic auto levelling system with vibration compensation, semi-auto and pressure-advanced belt tensioning. We did a thorough self-test after unpacking the P1S to ensure everything worked.

When the printer is up and running, it automatically starts a bed levelling check during each print. It usually lasts about six minutes, but you can skip it if you do not want to.

It is not necessary to set the z height/z offset. Plus, there is no option/button to do so since the P1S can handle the settings.

Bambu Studio is the custom slicer for the P1S and resembles PrusaSlicer. If you have used Prusa before, the interface will be highly familiar. Based on our experience, the presets for all filament types were easy to use.

Bambu Slicer works with other printers, including Creality, Elegoo, Anycubic, and many other brands. It also has a growing list of presets for these 3D printer manufacturers.

The default profiles worked excellently and were easy to use. Advanced settings are also available, including fuzzy skin, tree supports, and everything you expect in modern slicers.

After setting up WiFi on the P1, Bambu Studio offers more features. It allows you to manage the printer and the AMS, view the live video feed, and manage timelapse recordings. You must remove the SD card from the printer to access the recordings.

In addition, you can also colour your prints via  Bambu Studio. It features a standard painting program, and it does not require professional designer skills to use it.

The device tab lets you send files via WiFi, remotely tweak the printing speed and temperature, and watch timelapse videos.

It is also possible to save complex builts via project manager, letting you create one shareable 3mf file. The latter can include several plates of photos, build parts, and bills of materials.

We were surprised by its multi-material painting tools. These let you take standard 3D models to paint colours and use various materials.

The Handy app is more straightforward than the Bambu Studio but has numerous functions. It provides AMS information and offers viewing of the live video feed via your phone. Plus, it has standard controls like pausing or stopping a print.

Handy was highly convenient when we needed to monitor the progress of prints while we were away from the P1S.

Before printing, the P1S performed self-checking and automatic levelling. Unlike with other 3D printers, we did not need to place a sheet of paper under the nozzle. We also did not adjust any settings since the printer did everything it had to do before producing prints.

The self-checks and levelling took around five minutes, but it was worth the wait since it made our 10-hour prints successful. The auto-levelling offered a perfect first layer, which made working with any layer thickness easy.

In our experience, the P1S was excellent, and its performance could match FDM and FFF 3D printers. Its efficient operation and print quality beat other similar products.

As we mentioned, we did not tweak any settings, but the printed models were perfect. It also performed with high speeds and minimal vibrations, thanks to the CoreXY Kinematic System.

Prints were incredibly fast and the printer operated very quietly when compared to other high speed printers.

We found that the auto leveling was spot on, with the first print layers being perfect. We were incredibly impressed as the quality of each layer and how good adhesion was.

The prints stuck firmly to the print bed when printing, avoiding any issue with prints slipping or moving. We were very surprised at how easily the prints came off the build plate when the prints were finished. Much better than any other printers we have used before.

Another thing that surprised us was just how well finished the prints were. We were expecting for there to be texture to the prints from each layer (as is common with 3D prints), however the prints were completely smooth. There was no finishing that we needed to do to a print once it had completed.

This truly is an impressive printer!

The AMS performed perfectly when we did test prints. It worked perfectly for producing multi-coloured models and as a support material.

One of the unique features of the AMS that impressed us was the RFID spool detection. The P1S immediately recognised the colour and material of the Bambu Lab spool since it had an RFID tag.

We also saw the material in each slot of the AMS, and we used it to set up a print. AMS also used the print identifier to monitor the remaining amount of filament on each spool.

As we mentioned, AMS is not only for multi-coloured prints. It was also handy as a spool holder that helped save time since we only had to swap colours once. We did not have to run eight batches on a single-colour machine, making it less wasteful.

Bambu Lab P1S 3D Printer Review Summary

The P1S has similar platform-wide specifications as the Bambu Lab P1P and X1 Carbon 3D printers. It also uses the same software & cloud ecosystem, delivers industry-shifting performance, and integrates seamlessly with the AMS.

We had an excellent user experience when we tested this product for our Bambu Lab P1S 3D Printer Review. One reason why we loved this 3D printer was its user-friendliness. It had an automatic levelling system, so manually doing this was unnecessary, and it also had an intuitive companion software.

Aside from being easy to use, it produced high-quality prints using different filament types. Some required minor adjustments on the printing speed, but these were easy since the printer and software are user-friendly.

We highly recommend the P1S since it has an enclosure and regulated chamber for more material options. It is also best when used with the AMS. Learn more about the P1S 3D Printer when you visit the official product page of Bambu Lab.
