Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard Review

Last year, we tested and reviewed the K70 RGB TKL mechanical keyboard. It was considered a solid and efficient product. Today in our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review, we’ll check out the updated version of this keyboard.

What we have for review is the K70 RGB TKL OPX. It’s a mechanical keyboard with a compact TKL form factor combined with AXON hyper-processing technology and OPX RGB key switches.

We’ll look into its design, functionality, features, and performance to determine if it’s a product worth purchasing.

Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard Packaging

The keyboard arrived in time for our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review. When we got our hands on it, we noticed its similar packaging design to the K70 RGB TKL.

The package sports a black and yellow theme. In front of the box, you’ll see an image of the product displayed. You’ll also find Corsair’s branding and the keyboard’s name here.

But compared to the earlier model’s packaging, the front portion of the K70 RGB TKL OPX’s box displays some extras. Specifically, these are the keyboard’s main selling features.

When you flip the box, another image of the keyboard is displayed. But this time, some points identify the functions of each key. To the left of the image, you’ll find more information related to the product.

Inside the box, the K70 RGB TKL OPX is wrapped in a plastic bag while sitting securely in place. There’s no extra space in the package, so the keyboard won’t wobble about while in transit.

Other than the keyboard, you’ll find a USB-C to A cable, a safety leaflet, and a warranty card inside.

Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard Review – Design and Functionality

It’s vital to know about a product’s design and functions. So, we’re discussing these in our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review.

Design-wise, the K70 RGB TKL OPX still sports the same aluminium frame and plastic body. So, it’s still portable and lightweight but feels very solid. Its rubber pads on the rear prevent the product from sliding or slipping from your desk.

Generally, everything feels sturdy and premium.

Moreover, the K70 RGB TKL OPX still has the regular features of the previous keyboard. These include the 100% anti-ghosting and full-key rollover. These features allow the product to detect the rapid key mashes you make.

It can resist the wear-and-tear on its keys because of the durable double-shot PBT keycaps. Plus, it has a detachable USB-C port for quick swapping and a finely-braided cord + fastener to keep everything organised.

The keyboard feels more compact and ergonomic when placed on the desk. That’s because your right hand can stay at a straight angle. Staying in this position will decrease fatigue when playing for hours. And more importantly, it lessens aches and pain issues on your tendons like “tennis elbows”.

Four huge rubber pads are placed on each corner of the keyboard to keep it from slipping. The two feet on top open sideways to elevate the K70 RGB TKL OPX. Additionally, the feet have rubber pads to avoid scratching the surface of your desk.

What’s missing are the cable-routing cutouts and wrist rests that are present on other high-end keyboards from Corsair. Luckily, you can purchase a standalone wrist rest if you badly need one for added comfort.

The New OPX Optical Switches

We’re also discussing the new OPX switches in this Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review. It’s one of the keyboard’s upgrades, and it uses light and sensors for detecting keystrokes.

This feature allows for better detection of keypresses while simultaneously providing a more pleasant feel when mashing on the keys.

Media Buttons

The K70 RGB TKL OPX also has media functions that make using the keyboard more efficient. These include a stop, pause/play, last track, mute, and next track button on the product. Corsair also added a volume wheel at the top-right section of the keyboard.

USB-C Port and Tournament Switch

The inclusion of a detachable keyboard makes it more portable. The side that faces away from you features a cutout at the centre. It’s where the USB-C connector plugs in.

Then, it also has a casing on either side of the keyboard that safeguards the connectors. Additionally, the braided cable has a durable black sleeve that matches the rest of the keyboard to keep its aesthetics.

Beside the port is a switch for activating the Tournament Mode. It deactivates the custom actions and macros to prevent cheating during game tournaments. This switch also alters the backlight to a static-single colour.

RGB of the Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard

The K70 RGB TKL OPX features fantastic RGB lighting zones. Each key and the logo at the top are customisable with colours and patterns. You can also set multiple lighting profiles if you like switching modes.

There’s also a dedicated lighting key for adjusting the brightness of the lighting.

This part is where we’ll discuss the product’s different specifications in our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review.

Corsair gave it a 2-year warranty which we think is good. It has lightning RGB, 87 Matrix keys, wired connectivity, plus Corsair’s OPX optical-mechanical key switches. Don’t forget its USB polling rate of up to 8,000Hz with AXON.

This 0.88kg tenkeyless keyboard is a K70 type with a full-key NKRO rollover and 100% anti-ghosting features. The keyboard uses a USB 3.0 or 3.1 type-A connection and a braided cable. It makes for a more durable connection that’s sure to last.

The K70 RGB sports an 8MB onboard memory with 50 onboard profiles. Not only that, but it also comes with an integrated touchpad that measures 360 x 164 x 40mm.

Hands-on with the Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard

Here in our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review is where we’ll share our experience with the keyboard. Did it perform just as good as its predecessor, or is the K70 RGB TKL OPX much better?

We’ll find out. But first, we’ll discuss the software that works with the keyboard.

iCUE Software

Like most gaming keyboards from Corsair, the K70 RGB TKL OPX is customisable via the iCUE software. The interface shows the same settings as keyboards with Cherry MX switches. Why? Because of the same hardware LED drivers and microcontrollers on the PCB.

Using the iCUE software, we successfully adjusted and customised various settings with ease. These included polling rate adjustment, per-key RGB customisation, and LED brightness.

The software ran smoothly while its interface was user-friendly. Navigating the menus was easy, and we didn’t experience any issues since the software was up to date.

Performance of the Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard

To test the K70 RGB TKL, we used it for gaming and typing. It was one of the fastest keyboards we’ve used. Even with 1.0mm actuation, it was reliable since it registered all our keypresses.

When we tried it for gaming, it was one of the keyboards that delivered the best performance.

And with well-spaced keys, we were able to type comfortably without needing any adjustments. However, it’s slightly oversensitive due to its actuation point, so it may not be the best for typing. But for those who prefer sensitive keys, this element may be essential.

In terms of RGB, it was vibrant enough to be visible in the dark since it wasn’t too distracting. Also, the dedicated button on the keyboard’s top allowed us to adjust its brightness whenever necessary.

Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard Review Summary

The K70 RGB TKL OPX is an impressive pro-grade gaming keyboard that’s well-constructed. It comes with everything you’d look for in a tenkeyless gaming keyboard: features, aesthetics, ergonomics, durability, and of course, performance.

Its switches have an 8,000 Hz polling rate and 1.0mm actuation point, making the keyboard great for gaming. When we tested the product for our Corsair K70 RGB TKL OPX Mechanical Keyboard review, it was fast and responsive. We had the advantage in all the games we played since the keyboard registered our keypresses smoothly.
