Windows 11 bloatware has become impossible to ignore, and buying a new laptop now means inheriting a second software layer nobody actually asked for. Spec sheets get all the attention during a purchase, yet the moment a new machine boots up, buyers are greeted by a manufacturer app demanding an account, a launcher, and a handful of settings that Windows 11 itself simply doesn’t offer.

That second point is the awkward part. Some of this preinstalled software genuinely earns its place. Battery charge limits, custom fan curves, and model-specific performance modes often live nowhere else, which makes uninstalling the whole package a real trade-off rather than an easy win.

Why Windows 11 bloatware keeps growing

Asus is a useful example of how this starts reasonably. On supported laptops, MyASUS handles Battery Care Mode and fan profiles tuned to that specific chassis, controls Windows 11 doesn’t natively provide. Gaming laptops push the idea much further. Alienware Command Center, for instance, offers an “Overdrive” performance mode that pushes fans harder while engaging a dedicated cooling system built into the hardware. None of that is unreasonable on its own.

The trouble starts when a useful control panel starts acquiring ambitions beyond the hardware it was built to manage. Armoury Crate still gives Asus ROG owners genuine performance and cooling controls, but it now also carries a user account system and optional content services bolted on top. Lenovo’s Legion Space pairs thermal management with a game store and an AI-branded Gaming Zone, while HP’s Omen Gaming Hub mixes fan and graphics settings with a game library and GeForce Now integration.

Taken individually, each feature is defensible. Bundled together, the hardware controls start to feel like a small part of a much larger product, one a buyer never chose to install in the first place.

The uninstall problem

Ordinary bloatware has an easy fix: delete it. Manufacturer utilities are trickier, because some settings meaningfully change how a laptop performs. The MSI Raider 16 Max HX illustrates the tension well. It ships with a fair amount of bundled software, yet MSI Center itself still provides genuinely useful access to performance presets and RGB lighting controls.

Wiping every manufacturer app for a cleaner Windows 11 install can mean losing real functionality along with the clutter. To MSI’s credit, MSI Center is at least modular, letting owners install only the features they want rather than everything by default. That approach doesn’t fix the wider problem, but it does show a company thinking about the download size and footprint of its own software.

For Asus owners who want granular hardware control without the extras, G-Helper offers an open-source alternative. It provides performance and GPU mode switching, battery charge limits, and other hardware settings in a lightweight package, drawing on the same firmware presets used by Asus’s ROG software ecosystem. It’s a niche solution, but its existence proves that granular laptop controls don’t need an entire bloated ecosystem to work.

Where Windows 11 could actually help

Some of this problem traces back to gaps in Windows 11 itself. Smart Charging exists on compatible devices, but there’s no universal, standardised way to set a fixed charge limit, because Microsoft leaves each manufacturer to implement the feature its own way. That inconsistency is exactly why every brand ends up building its own separate app to fill the gap.

Windows 11 has already shown one path forward with Dynamic Lighting, which lets compatible RGB hardware be controlled directly through the operating system rather than a separate manufacturer utility. That said, Microsoft has already run into trouble standardising RGB lighting controls, and peripheral software has already been blamed for game crashes in related bugs, which shows standardisation isn’t without its own risks.

Fan tuning and firmware settings remain far too specific to individual chassis designs for Microsoft to fully absorb, so manufacturer software isn’t disappearing anytime soon. But every common control that Windows 11 can standardise is one less reason a laptop needs its own parallel settings app, and that would mean less Windows 11 bloatware sitting on new machines from day one.

A good preinstalled app should make a laptop easier to live with, then get out of the way until it’s needed again, whether that’s for gaming laptops like the Gigabyte Gaming A16 Pro or a modest everyday ultrabook. Until Windows 11 absorbs more of these common controls, buyers should expect the second software layer to stick around, even as Microsoft’s other recent Windows 11 cleanup efforts continue elsewhere in the operating system.
