ASUS PRIME Z790-A WIFI Motherboard Review – Design and Functionality

The Z790 is the flagship chipset introduced with other Intel 13th Gen CPUs. These products primarily cater to high-end motherboards on the market. It means the chipset is adequate for supporting PCIe Gen 5, CPU overclocking, etc.

The sleek appearance of the motherboard offers a package that centres around a modern and clean design aesthetic. If you look closely, it features a silver-toned nameplate and chipset cover. We love its distinct look, which makes it perfect for PC builders who want something different.

ASUS adopted a lighter colour scheme for its design, which boasts more heatsink coverage than its predecessor. As a result, this modern twist on existing Prime motherboards is more striking and attractive than other boards.

The motherboard has an ATX form factor and is for the LGA1700 CPUs. These include the Raptor Lake and Alder Lake processors.

Aside from its form factor, the top of the motherboard has headers for a CPU fan. There are also headers for an AIO pump and another CPU fan. Moreover, you can find an Aura Sync header and ATX power connector on the sides of the motherboard.

Beneath the header and power connector, you will see the front panel USB connectors. These are for the USB 3.2 Gen 2 and Gen 1 connector.

Its base contains multiple components, like the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for the GPU. There are also several slots from the Z790 chipset. These include a PCIe 4.0 x4, two PCIe 3.0 x1, and PCIe 4.0 x16 slots.

However, the Z790 boasts a significant improvement over the Z690. Now, eight of its PCIe Gen 3 lanes are Gen 4 lanes. Additionally, ASUS has removed heatsinks to accommodate four M.2 slots.

The M.2 array is impressively large while featuring a toolless installation. Furthermore, two SATA connectors are on the side of the motherboard, while two more are at the bottom.

This motherboard has a transparent window in the rear I/O area that serves an unclear function. We assume it is for showcasing its WIFI 6E module. So there is a big chance that this component is purely for aesthetic purposes.

On its rear, the PRIME Z790-A WIFI also features a fixed I/O shield that displays audio connections. Moreover, there are only three audio jacks and no optical output available. However, you will also find WIFI antenna headers and a 2.5GbE network port in this area.

You have access to four Type-A USB 3 5Gbps ports for USB connectivity.

Additionally, there are two USB Type-C ports and two Type-A USB 3 10Gbps ports (one 10Gbps and one 20Gbps). This motherboard offers video output via HDMI and DisplayPort, and it also comes with a WIFI antenna.

Let us also discuss the straightforward build process of the motherboard in this ASUS PRIME Z790-A WIFI Motherboard Review. In addition, the motherboard has several usability features for a convenient PC-building experience.

Next to the primary graphics card slot is the PCIe Slot Q-Release from ASUS. This feature allows you to take advantage of easy GPU swapping or quick removal during troubleshooting. Additionally, the M.2 drives feature the Q-Latch for fastening drives without requiring additional screws or tools.
