Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset Review – Design and Functionality

For our Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset Review, we compared this headset to the HS80 RGB we reviewed years ago. Its design remained the same. You can expect a sturdy, flexible frame plus a minimalist look with only several buttons on the HS80 Max Wireless.

The left portion of the headset houses the power button and volume dial. The latter also works as a customisable button that lets you switch between the default EQ presets.

You will also find a USB-C port at the base of its left earcup, which supports USB-C quick charge. The opposite earcup houses the multifunction Bluetooth button to pair the HS80 Max Wireless with mobile devices. It will also let you manage multimedia playback with triple, single, and double presses.

This element is situated on the left portion of the headset. You can slightly bend it to your mouth, allowing optimised vocal pickup. Flip it upwards for convenience if you want to mute it or when not in use.

It also supports Nvidia Broadcast technology on PCs, which uses AI to lessen external audio while boosting your voice. To use this feature, ensure you have an RTX 2060 graphics card or something later.

The HS80 Max Wireless is mainly about comfort. So, rotating memory foam ear cups wrapped in breathable, soft fabric are essential. These help guarantee your ears will not get too hot while listening to music or gaming.

Moreover, it has a floating headband design to decrease pressure at the top of your head during prolonged use. The Velcro straps on the inner portion of the headset’s frame allow you to easily adjust the headband height.

Connectivity

While writing this Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset Review, we learned that it supports Mac, PS5, PC, and PS4. The latter is possible thanks to the 2.4GHz wireless connection via the included USB adapter. If not, you can pair it with a Nintendo Switch or a mobile device via Bluetooth.

Its 2.4GHz connection is awesome, allowing you to enjoy clear audio up to 15.24m away. This feature lets you walk to another area without worrying about audio drops.

The headset supports 96kHz/24-bit studio-quality audio over the 2.4GHz wireless connection. It also supports Dolby Atmos on your PC and the Tempest 3D Audio spec on PS5.

Remember that only one can be active, even if it supports Bluetooth and wireless connections. That means you cannot listen to music or podcasts on your Smartphone while listening to your game audio.

Controls

Managing audio playback is precise since its Bluetooth button is multifunctional. It can play/pause your media with one press. Then, you can make two presses to skip tracks and return to the earlier track with three presses.

You can even customise the secondary button of the volume dial through iCUE.

Hands-on with the Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset

Before we discuss its performance, our Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset Review will focus on the iCUE software. Like most Corsair products, this software allows you to customise specific settings. Although it isn’t as extensive as other RGB-heavy PC components, you can still tweak things like the following:

  • EQ Presets
  • Enable the Nvidia Broadcast feature for your microphone
  • Adjust RGB lights on the earcup exterior
  • Update device firmware, etc.

Moreover, the HS80 Max Wireless supports SoundID – an approach to audio that focuses on providing a personalised listening experience. To take advantage of SoundID, you must take a quick and simple hearing test. It will help measure the audio sensitivity of your ears.

After selecting a looping generic tune that suits your preferences, you will be presented with numerous clips. These will alter the audio slightly; you must choose the best-sounding sample from there.

When this part is complete, you will have a customised EQ preset that can be toggled on/off at will.

The product we’re discussing in this Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Headset Review is a modern gaming headset. And like similar products, the HS80 Max Wireless offers convenience thanks to its plug-and-play feature for PC and PS5. After we plugged in its USB adapter, the headset was instantly recognised and ready to use.

We did not experience any issues or discomfort while testing this headset, which was great. Its ear cups were extremely breathable, and its plush memory foam did not push against our heads, causing pain. Even when someone wears eyeglasses, using the HS80 is still comfortable, even during long hours of use.

We spent most of the time testing this product on our PC, shifting between a series of different games. The default audio was amazing across all the games we played, and the presence of Dolby Atmos (PC) optimised everything. All these created a more immersive listening experience, which we loved.

The HS80 Max Wireless produced excellent audio for gaming, and nothing was different regarding music. Its sound quality was superior when we played music over Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless. Regardless of the genre, this headset delivered punchy bass and crisp highs and handled everything effortlessly.

Bass accuracy was good. Although its low bass was under-emphasised, it offered a balanced mid-bass and adequate punch. Despite the lack of thump and rumble on sounds like explosions, the headset delivered a warm sound.

The mid-accuracy was superb. Despite the continuing overemphasis of the high bass into the low-mid, the entire range was sufficiently flat. The high bass caused the slightly cluttered and muddy sound, but the flat range intensified dialogues and instruments.

What we loved about this headset was its effortlessly hitting low bass and high treble notes. The headset delivered highs with adequate clarity that made other headsets sound tinny.

The HS80 Max Wireless shines the most with its mid-tones due to its warm, neutral sound. This audio quality offers an immersive gaming experience.

Microphone Performance

The HS80 Max Wireless boom mic offered excellent recording quality. Our voices were full, detailed, and intelligible, even in voice calls while gaming.
