Hands-on with the Reolink Argus 3 Ultra
Before discussing the product performance, let us focus on the setup process and how the app and client work.
The Camera Setup Process
The first thing we did for our Reolink Argus 3 Ultra Review was to set up the camera. It was quick and easy, with us popping open a rubber flap underneath the unit.
From there, we switched it on, opened the app, and tapped a blue plus button. The latter allows you to add the camera.
Reolink App
The Reolink smartphone app allows remote access and convenient control of the Argus 3 Ultra. You can also use the Reolink Client via PCs and laptops.
The app and client send instant alerts when the Argus 3 Ultra detects suspicious activities. We tested it for this Reolink Argus 3 Ultra Review to determine how fast it would send a notification. Surprisingly, it immediately sent the alert upon detecting the abnormal activity.
Aside from notifications, the app and client allow playing old video clips. You can view recordings according to the timeline and event type.
Performance and Video Quality
This camera captured superior recordings when we tested it for this Reolink Argus 3 Ultra Review. Although 4K UHD resolution is no longer new, it retains excellent quality and is impressive on security cameras.
We inspected our footage with this camera and noticed the names on book spines across a room were visible. For outdoor recordings, we also noticed licence plates were easy to read.
Everything the Argus 3 Ultra captured was crisp, smooth, and had minimal blurring. We noticed the short lag time in a few videos, and these rarely occurred.
Night vision was also impressive since the monochromatic infrared night vision captured many details. Colour night vision had sufficient ambient light, and colours were visible and accurate.
Aside from accurate colours, the recordings of this camera were distortion-free in different modes. With dual-band WiFi, 4K footage was more stable and lag-free.
Motion Detection, Spotlights And Sirens
The motion detection alerts of the Argus 3 Ultra worked efficiently during our tests. These precisely differentiated people, animals, vehicles, and the motion of various objects so the camera did not send unnecessary alerts. We also appreciate the settings for controlling the motion detection sensitivity and zones where it will detect or ignore motions.
The spotlight illuminates at 450 lumens, which is brighter than an average camping headlamp shining at 350 lumens. It also immediately lit up when it detected motion, making it an excellent deterrent.
The sirens were adequately audible but not loud enough to catch the attention of others beyond the immediate vicinity. Reolink advertises it has a 90dB siren, which was also responsive when the camera detected suspicious motion.
